How to prevent burn wounds:

Preventing burn wounds involves maintaining a safe home environment and setting certain standards of care:

Kitchen Safety

  • Cook on back burners: Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to prevent knocking them over.
  • Use oven mitts: Avoid using wet towels or oven mitts, as they can cause steam burns.
  • Keep children away: Maintain a “kid-free zone” around the stove, oven, and microwave.
  • Microwave caution: Use caution when heating food in microwaves, as containers can become very hot, and heat food uniformly.

Preventing Scalds (Hot Liquids)

  • Lower geyser temperature: Set your home geyser to a lower temperature to prevent tap water burns.
  • Check bathwater: Always test bathwater temperature with your hand or elbow before children enter, running cold water first.
  • Handle hot drinks safely: Do not carry children while holding hot beverages, and use travel mugs with lids.

Home & Fire Safety

  • Supervise children: Never leave children unattended near candles, fireplaces, or heaters.
  • Store dangerous items: Keep matches, lighters, and cleaning chemicals in locked, high cabinets.
  • Unplug appliances: Unplug flat irons, curling irons, and clothing irons after use.
  • Electrical safety: Do not overload outlets and immediately fix or discard cords with exposed wiring.

Outdoor Precautions

  • Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to prevent sunburns.
  • Braai: Keep grills away from railings. Keep a watchful eye on children at a braai. Do not consume large amounts of alcohol when near an open fire.
